From Syria with baklava

A long-time Salloura employee, Ezzat, serves Salloura's famous pastries to customers streaming into the shop in Istanbul, Turkey.

When Ahmed and Rashed moved to Istanbul to escape the war in Syria, they never thought it would be only the middle of their journey. But now, the employees of a well-known chain of sweet shops find themselves asking, “Can the sweet tastes of Syria be recreated in Germany?”

This is the story of an epic journey, of food and family, and the sweet shop, Salloura. Syrian-American reporter and GroundTruth Middle East Reporting Fellow Dalia Mortada tells the story.

We used a lot of music and sounds in this episode of the podcast, including songs from these artists, and news reports from the BBC, CNN, Reuters, and Al Jazeera.
